Saturday 19th – Saturday 26th July 2008
This year we will be having a week long summer camp in the heart of Robin Hood country – Sherwood Forest. Walesby Forest Scout Camp is situated 10 miles north east of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. The journey will take between 2 and 3 hours from Linslade. The site comprises of 250 acres of woodland and parkland, with lots of large open grassed areas for camping. We had a very successful camp at Walesby in 2006 and it really is a stunning location. We have booked the same pitch we had last time, which is gently sloping with a mixture of trees and gorse surrounding. We will be a short 2 minute walk away from one of two toilet blocks with hot water and hot showers.
The site is well equipped with on site activities, such as an outdoor swimming pool, climbing wall, traversing wall, abseiling, orienteering, mini golf, archery, indoor air rifle range and a games room. There is also a lake on site where kayaking and rafting are available. There is a providore where there is a plentiful supply of sweets etc. There is also a river running down the western boundary of the site where fishing is available – so bring your rod! As with most of our camps, the Scouts will have plenty of opportunities to cook their own meals on open fires and practice other Scouting skills.
Off site in the surrounding area, there are numerous attractions. Of course there is Sherwood Forest for hikes in the footsteps of Robin Hood, and an interesting visitor centre. Locally there is a water mill to visit, that we didn’t get to last time. Alton Towers is not too far away and we intend spending a day there. The entry ticket is included in the overall cost of camp.
We will be travelling by minibus, and will therefore initially be limited on numbers to fill the bus. If more want to go, we will be reliant on parents joining us for the camp and bringing their cars. Parents will be welcomed as usual, as we can’t run these camps without your help. It is a good chance to get back to nature, spend some time with the kids, and take part in few outdoor activities. There is also a licensed bar on site, which might help to swing your decision!! Parents attending will have to be CRB checked. We will be hiring a van to transport all camping equipment and personal kit, which will travel to camp the night before.
The cost of the camp will be £150 per person. As mentioned before, this includes entry ticket to Alton Towers, along with minibus and van hire, camp fees activities and food for the week. At present we need to know numbers interested in going on camp, as we have to make bookings etc. To reserve a place on the trip, login with your username and password then click “Activity Registration ” and register your name. A deposit of £50 will be required by the end of February, and the balance 8 weeks before camp. Completed permission/health forms will be required 3 weeks before camp. Forms and kit list will be issued via the mailing list and will be available for download from the our website.
